Kristal and Craig first met in high school after Kristal's family moved from Southern California to Belle Fourche, South Dakota. It was a difficult transition for Kristal, a very blonde Southern California girl with a "valley-girl-like accent." After about 32 years, Kristal left the small town and vowed never to return. Fate brought Kristal and Craig back together in late 2020, and Craig promised Kristal's mother that he would bring her home. Kristal's family owns 20 acres of pristine land in the Black Hills of South Dakota, which had never been used for growing crops. The soil was perfect for grapes, and other vineyards in the area were thriving. Running a winery full-time would mean returning to the land, but Kristal and Craig were up for the challenge. Thus, Wayward Daughter Vineyard and Winery was born.
